In London in April 1853 a young English gentleman boarded the sailing ship Plantagenet bound for Australia. Among his personal belongings were several trunks containing watches and jewellery. With these items Richard John Hardy established the first Hardy Brothers store in Australia, trading from modest rooms in Jamison Street, Sydney.
